Lexington – Drivers in Lexington should be prepared for significant lane closures along South Broadway and within the New Circle Road area, as construction and sanitary sewer work begin this week.
Sanitary sewer work will require the inbound left lane and center turn lane on South Broadway to be closed daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The closures will occur between Monday and Friday, with signage in place to alert drivers of the changes. Authorities are advising motorists to exercise caution and reduce speed as they navigate through the work zone.
In addition, the ongoing New Circle Road widening project will lead to lane closures starting Thursday on both Leestown Road and New Circle Road. Work will commence at 1 p.m. on Thursday, where one lane of Leestown Road at the New Circle Road bridge will be shut down. Subsequently, at 9 p.m., a lane will also be closed on the New Circle outer loop covering the bridge over Leestown Road.
By 10 p.m. on Thursday, both Leestown Road and New Circle Road are expected to be fully closed for construction activities. Traffic will be redirected onto interchange ramps to navigate around the construction zone effectively. All lanes are projected to reopen by 5 a.m. on Friday, allowing normal traffic flow to resume.
The New Circle Road widening project, a multi-year initiative, aims to enhance safety and travel times in the rapidly growing regions of Lexington. This project is expected to reach completion by 2027 and will incorporate a double crossover diamond design at the Leestown interchange. This innovative design is intended to reduce the occurrence of crashes, mirroring the successful implementation of a similar design on Harrodsburg Road.
As this construction progresses, drivers are encouraged to remain vigilant for further updates on lane closures and traffic patterns. The city officials recommend planning ahead for delays and exploring alternate routes, particularly during work hours. Enhanced road designs and systems are a key focus for city planners, who aim to address the increased demand for road safety and transportation efficiency in Lexington.
In summary, motorists in Lexington should anticipate ongoing disruptions due to both the sanitary sewer work on South Broadway and the substantial construction activities associated with the New Circle Road widening project. Adhering to guidance from city signage and exercising caution in work zones will ensure safety for all roadway users during this period of improvement.
