Lexington, Kentucky Prepares for 250th Anniversary Celebration with Year-Long Festivities and Cultural Events

Lexington, Kentucky is gearing up for a momentous year as it prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary in 2025. Mayor Linda Gorton has announced a series of events and festivities that will unfold throughout the year, transforming the city into a hub of activity and culture. The celebrations are being described as a year-long party featuring a variety of events, including bourbon and jazz festivals, special concerts, and theater productions, culminating in the premiere of Lexington’s own documentary.

Bloomberg’s recent recognition of Lexington as one of the 25 best places in the world to visit in 2025 has added to the anticipation surrounding the festivities. “Lexington is getting a lot of notice this year as a travel destination, and we’re ready to welcome visitors to our exciting city,” Gorton stated in an email. She emphasized that the anniversary will include events that cater to diverse interests, inviting everyone to join in the celebrations.

This call to celebrate not only highlights Lexington’s renowned bourbon distilleries and Keeneland horse races, but also urges visitors to delve into the city’s rich Black history. Four newly updated African American Heritage walking tours have been introduced, showcasing significant narratives, including the contributions of Black horse jockeys and the historical alleyways used by enslaved individuals. Fresh Bourbon, one of Kentucky’s first Black-owned distilleries, is also enhancing its offerings with mixology classes and whiskey tastings complemented by food pairings.

In June, the city will host a 10-day SoulFeast Week aimed at spotlighting Black-owned restaurants. This event will feature hip-hop brunches and farm-to-table dinners at Coleman Crest, Kentucky’s first Black-owned organic farm, further emphasizing the vibrant cultural tapestry of the city.

Bloomberg has also positioned Lexington as a rising competitor to Nashville, Tennessee, praising its evolving music scene. The Manchester, the city’s first boutique hotel, is located near popular venues such as Manchester Music Hall and the Burl, where emerging country artists are scheduled to perform.

Recognition has flowed in from various quarters, including accolades from Southern Living, which highlighted Lexington as a must-visit destination. Lexinton was also mentioned in a list of America’s best small cities by Condé Nast Traveler, further solidifying its status as a noteworthy travel stop.

As the city gears up for its landmark anniversary, Lexington invites everyone to partake in the celebrations planned for 2025. With a rich blend of music, food, and heritage, this year promises to be a fitting tribute to a city with a storied past and a bright future.
