Lexington Holiday Parade Brings Community Together
Lexington celebrated the season with its annual Holiday Parade on Saturday, Dec. 7, showcasing local families, businesses, schools, and organizations. The parade, which originated at Midland Avenue and concluded at Tandy Pavilion, drew a large crowd of enthusiastic spectators along Main Street.
Organized by students from the University of Kentucky’s Department of Integrated Strategic Communications, this event served as a hands-on project for those enrolled in an event planning class. Marc Whitt, the professor leading the course, praised the students for their dedication and professionalism. “It’s a huge undertaking…every semester students rise to the occasion,” he noted.
The students were divided into groups that focused on various aspects of the parade, including public relations, recruitment, and the interactive children’s area known as “Santa’s Corner.” Senior student Cameron Adams expressed his excitement about the community turnout despite the cold weather, remarking on the positive atmosphere generated by the event.
Newcomers to Lexington, James and Nicole Kelleher, attended their first parade since relocating from Missouri. “Every weekend there’s something going on somewhere in Lexington or close by, so that’s been really nice to explore,” Nicole said, reflecting on the vibrant community spirit of the city.
Participants in the parade included local dance groups, high school marching bands, and even members of the University of Kentucky women’s soccer team and the DanceBlue organization. For communications senior Maddie Mason, the parade was a crucial kickoff to the holiday season, bringing festive cheer to the community.
The partnership between the University of Kentucky and the Downtown Lexington Partnership blossomed four years ago after a conversation between Whitt and Laura Farnsworth, the director of development and events for the Downtown Lexington Partnership. This collaboration allows students to gain real-world experience while contributing to a significant community celebration.
Whitt emphasized the importance of the event for both students and the community, stating, “My favorite part is seeing the look of everyone having so much fun…there’s so much joy on their faces.” The collaboration continues to strengthen ties within the Lexington community while providing invaluable learning experiences for students.
