Lexington Prepares for a Safe Halloween with Tips for Trick-or-Treaters

Lexington, Ky. is gearing up for Halloween, with trick-or-treating set for Thursday from 6-8 p.m. As excitement builds for this festive occasion, parents and children are reminded to prioritize safety while enjoying the tradition.

Lexington Police Department’s Lieutenant Daniel Truex emphasizes the responsibilities of both drivers and trick-or-treaters to ensure a safe Halloween experience. “First is for the people that are out driving during this time. Watch your speed limit, stay off your phone. Expect children who may dart out unexpectedly,” he advised.

Truex also recommends families opt for walking rather than crossing streets, providing a safer environment for young trick-or-treaters. When approaching houses, he urges parents to inspect the candy before letting children indulge. “Go through it. Pay attention to the packaging,” he said. “Unless you really know and trust someone, I probably wouldn’t accept homemade stuff.” While recent years have seen minimal candy-related concerns, the police encourage vigilance.

In addition to candy safety, Truex suggests remaining considerate to neighbors during trick-or-treating hours. Many residents will leave their lights on to indicate they welcome visitors. “If lights aren’t on, typically it means they don’t welcome that,” he noted, reminding families to respect those who may turn in early for the night.

As Halloween approaches, local authorities are committed to ensuring that families can enjoy the festivities safely. With reminders from law enforcement and community cooperation, Lexington aims to make this Halloween both fun and secure.
