LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Lexington Fraternal Order of Firefighters is continuing its long-standing tradition by assisting local families during the holiday season through the annual Lexington Fire Fighter’s Toy Program. This year marks the 94th anniversary of the initiative, which aims to provide gifts to families in need during Christmas.
With a record-breaking turnout, 840 families have registered for assistance this year. According to Lt. Chris MacFarlane, president of the order, this program serves individuals from diverse backgrounds, many of whom are facing significant challenges. “A lot of our families come from multiple different backgrounds. Some are just having a hard time this year,” he stated. He emphasized the organization’s commitment to help without probing into personal circumstances, simply offering assistance to those who ask.
The firefighters are focused on dismantling financial and language barriers that might hinder families from receiving help. To facilitate communication, interpreters like Lily MacFarlane play a crucial role in the program. Lily noted that her ability to speak Spanish has made a considerable difference for families who find it difficult to express themselves in English. “As soon as I start speaking Spanish to them, they are just so grateful that somebody can understand what they’re saying,” Lily explained, highlighting the emotional impact of effective communication.
This community effort is made even more meaningful through the interactions between volunteers and families. Ana Bonella, a participant, expressed her gratitude, stating, “It’s a very good act that people like her are helping me, and I am really thankful.” These personal connections are a vital part of what the toy program aims to achieve during the holiday season.
Despite the challenges presented by high demand, Lt. MacFarlane confirmed that they managed to collect enough toys for the families on their list this year. This achievement reflects the commitment of local firefighters and the wider community to ensuring that the spirit of Christmas is felt by everyone, especially those experiencing hardship.
The Lexington Fire Fighter’s Toy Program stands as a beacon of hope and support within the community, reinforcing the values of compassion and solidarity during one of the most challenging times of the year for many families.
