Lexington Firefighters Launch Toy Program for 2024 Christmas Season

Lexington, Ky. – Fire officials in Lexington have officially kicked off the 2024 Lexington Firefighters Toy Program on Tuesday, inviting the community to contribute new, unwrapped toys to ensure that every child in the city experiences the joy of Christmas.

According to Battalion Chief Jordan Saas, “What a joy it is to kick off this year’s toy drive. The fire service is full of traditions, and this toy drive is one of them for us.” This annual initiative aims to collect toys suitable for children from newborns up to 12 years old.

The program is now entering its 94th year, with the fire department continuing its legacy of supporting families during the holidays. Saas noted, “At its core, the fire department’s mission is to serve our community proactively, but we can’t do it alone.”

The community is encouraged to bring toys to any of the city’s 24 fire stations. Last year, nearly 30,000 toys were collected, demonstrating the program’s significant impact.

Firefighters’ involvement in helping children goes back to when they would build and repair toys for kids in their neighborhoods. Although those days are long gone, the Lexington Fire Department remains committed to making a difference in the lives of local children.

To launch the program, Mayor Linda Gorton made the inaugural donation of a “Bluey” fire engine toy, intended for a Lexington child to enjoy on Christmas Day.

Sign-up for families to receive toys will take place from November 4 through November 13. For further details on the toy program, residents can refer to the Lexington Firefighters Toy Program website.
