Lexington is set to celebrate its rich 250-year history in higher education with a unique event called the College Town Showcase, scheduled for the last weekend of March. This celebration, organized by the city’s 250th anniversary commission, aims to honor the significant role Lexington has played in the educational landscape of the region.

Mayor Linda Gorton emphasized the importance of education in the city’s development, noting that Lexington has been an educational hub since its founding days. The presence of several universities has contributed to a highly educated workforce, which in turn has made the city an attractive location for businesses and technological advancements.

The 250Lex College Town Showcase will feature events hosted by local educational institutions, including Transylvania University, the University of Kentucky, and Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC). Residents and visitors are invited to explore campuses, learn more about local educational offerings, and engage in sporting events, showcasing Lexington’s historical commitment to education.

Event Details

The schedule for the showcase includes various activities at each institution:

  • Transylvania University: On March 28-29, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., attendees can enjoy self-guided tours, visit Special Collections, and support Pioneers baseball, softball, and lacrosse games.
  • University of Kentucky: On March 30, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the university invites the public to explore the campus starting at the Visitor Center in the Gatton Student Center. Key locations include the Historic Memorial Coliseum and an Esports tournament at The Cornerstone.
  • Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC): BCTC will host its event on March 27, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Newtown Campus. The showcase will celebrate 85 years of educational legacy and include campus tours, a resource fair, application and financial aid assistance, and fresh kettle corn.

Scholarship Opportunity

During the BCTC event, a $3,000 250Lex Scholarship will be awarded at 5 p.m. Applications for the scholarship are open until March 25 and are exclusively available for Lexington residents.

Invitation to the Public

All events associated with the 250Lex College Town Showcase are free and open to the public. This initiative underlines the impact educational institutions have had on the city’s success and growth.

Background Context

Lexington has long been recognized for its strong educational foundations, with institutions such as the University of Kentucky and Transylvania University playing pivotal roles in post-secondary education for generations. The BCTC, with its rich history and legacy, has also significantly contributed to the education and training of local residents.

The 250th anniversary of Lexington serves as an opportunity not only to reflect on the past but also to engage current and future generations in understanding the value of education and community involvement.

As the city gears up for this expansive showcase, it highlights a commitment to fostering an educated society that continues to innovate and thrive within Lexington and beyond.
