The head of building inspection for the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, Bob Carpenter, recently illuminated the modern building code’s vast coverage. “We inspect houses and commercial buildings here in Fayette County. The inspections are all-encompassing where we address the footer, foundations, conduct framing inspection, insulation, energy inspections, and then carry out the final inspections,” said Carpenter.

Carpenter highlighted the critical functioning of the International Code Council, which consistently revises the model code. This activity can result in variations in implementations and changes state-to-state. Last week, Carpenter was recognized along with his team at a City Council meeting for this critical work.

Explaining the adaptation process, Carpenter stated, “Locations like Florida and Kentucky too, take that model code and amend it to strengthen their hurricane-specific components. Our approach here, however, varies based on the context. Our code is based on the ICC’s but slightly amended to fit the local conditions.”

Carpenter underscored that both commercial and residential structures undergo similar scrutiny. Lexington’s building inspection team has been industrious in its endeavors as it was the first to receive accreditation of a specific designation.
