Beers and Bunnies: Lexington Brewery Celebrates Leap Day for a Good Cause

Going the Extra Mile on the Extra Calendar Day

LEXINGTON, Ky. – West Sixth Brewing was brimming with more than just craft beer on Leap Day. To celebrate the day’s rarity, the event, dubbed ‘Hoppy Leap Day,’ the brewing company went the extra mile, offering specials on pints, flashy glassware, and even bonus shots of beer.

“Leap Day only comes around once every four years,” explained Kelly Hieronymous, Marketing Director of the brewing company. “So every other hour something changes. The deal changes. Which has been really fun to see people come in and wait for that deal to change, which has been really awesome.”

Extra Day, Extra Giving

Aside from the jovial atmosphere and the company’s leap-themed festivities, West Sixth Brewing also proved its philanthropic mettle. For every pint sold during the event, a dollar went directly to the Lexington Humane Society.

What made the event more special was the presence of some furry guests from the Lexington Humane Society. “We have things like dogs and cats, which you all know. But we also have things like exotic animals. Bunnies, ferrets, bearded dragons,” said Community Engagement Coordinator with the Lexington Humane Society, Allison Hall.

Bunnies Taking Center Stage

Despite the variety of adorable creatures, bunnies took center stage during the event. This is because, as Hall explained, bunnies often see an increase in adoption rates during Easter. But unfortunately, they also see a surge in the number of returned or abandoned bunnies soon after the holiday.

“So, bringing attention to this, rabbits are just as long term as dogs or cats and they’re just as amazing. So, if you’re looking for a new friend, maybe consider a rabbit,” appealed Hall.

The event managed to both raise awareness for bunny adoption while also offering attendees an unforgettable Leap Day experience. As an added touch, all the bunnies attending the event were available for adoption.

A Day of Extra Celebration

Combining the enjoyment of craft beer with the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of these cute creatures, this Leap Day event was a memorable one. West Sixth Brewing managed to make this extra day of the year extra special, tying together beers, bunnies, and philanthropy in a refreshing take on Leap Day celebrations.

It was a once-in-every-four-years kind of day that not only saw a rise in upturned beer glasses but hopefully also in bunny adoption applications.
