Woman dies following apartment fire in Lexington

In an unfortunate incident in Lexington, a woman succumbed to injuries following a blaze at an apartment. The incidents took place at the 2100 block of Ft. Harrod Drive.

Firefighters raced to the scene

The local firefighters were alerted about the situation around 4:30 pm when a neighbor reported a burning smell from the apartment building. Upon arrival, the firefighters discovered flames coming out of the building and instantly took action to bring it under control.

Battalion chief, Adam Sorrell, informally narrated the situation, “Our crews received a call about smoke in the apartment, which doesn’t come in the same bracket as a structure fire. So, initially, less response comes. But upon arrival, when our crews noticed the flames, the situation was upgraded to what we term as a structure fire response“.

The fire’s epicenter and the unfortunate discovery

Upon investigation, it was found that the fire originated in the kitchen. Once the firefighters managed to quench the flames, they came across a dreadful sight. They discovered a 59-year-old woman, unresponsive inside the bathroom. She was swiftly taken out and CPR was initiated until they got her into the ambulance. Unfortunately, it was later confirmed that she had died.

Fayette County Coroner, Gary Ginn, confirmed the unfortunate death, “They got her out as quick as they possibly could, started performing CPR until they got her into the ambulance, continued CPR and that’s when they were able to determine she had died“.

Unanswered questions about the woman’s death

Despite the situation, Ginn states that the cause of the woman’s death is still undetermined. Thus, leaving many unanswered questions. “There’s a lot of questions concerning her death, so we’re not going to make any type of ruling right now as far as the manner of death, whether it’s an accident, homicide, or suicide,” Ginn stated. We do not have an obvious manner of death like in some cases, so that’s why the investigation is kept open“.

Damage to other apartments and further investigations

The Lexington Fire officials reported minor smoke damage to a few surrounding apartments, but no other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire and the woman’s unfortunate death is still under investigation. It is reported that investigators have been on the scene, which is a standard protocol for such incidents.

The identity of the woman, whose life was claimed by this incident, would be released once her family has been informed. Further updates on this story will be reported as more information gets unveiled.

End Note: Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family during this difficult time.
