Laura Dake Appointed Mayor of Versailles by Governor Andy Beshear

Versailles, Kentucky – Laura Dake has been appointed mayor by Governor Andy Beshear, according to an announcement made Friday afternoon. Dake, a current member of the Versailles City Council, succeeds Brian Traugott, who resigned from the mayorship after 13 years to join the Kentucky League of Cities.

Governor Beshear’s office confirmed that Dake will complete the remainder of Traugott’s term, which runs until 2026. Expressing her gratitude, Dake stated on Facebook that she felt “honored and humbled” by her new role, remarking, “I’m feeling a little like a deer in the headlights at the moment, but looking forward to rolling up my sleeves and working hard for this community that I love.”

A resident of Versailles for 32 years, Dake has previously served on the city council, where she was recently re-elected to her fifth term. However, she is expected to resign from that position to assume her responsibilities as mayor. “I am just really grateful for the opportunity,” Dake elaborated in a brief interview following her appointment.

Before entering the realm of local government, Dake worked for ITNAmerica, a nonprofit organization providing transportation services for senior citizens. She serves as the board chair for Woodford Wheels, which developed from her previous work. In addition, Dake and her husband own Art Space Versailles, a gallery that focuses on showcasing Kentucky artists.

As mayor, Dake plans to concentrate on issues related to livability, walkability, sustainability, traffic, and economic development for the community. Her vision aims to enhance the quality of life for Versailles residents, a commitment she expressed during her inaugural address.

The city council had a 30-day window to appoint a new mayor following Traugott’s resignation. However, with four out of six council members vying for the position and none securing sufficient votes, the role was left for gubernatorial appointment.

In addition to Dake’s appointment, Beshear’s office also announced Fred Allen Meyer of Nicholasville as the new 1st District magistrate in Jessamine County, filling the vacancy left by the resignation of Justin Ray.
