Lane Closures on West High Street Starting December 9 for Speed Table Installation

Lexington residents should prepare for lane closures on one of the city’s busiest downtown streets. Starting Monday, December 9, the city will initiate construction to install speed tables on West High Street from Merino Street to Madison Place, which is expected to run continuously until Friday, December 20.

The right lane will be closed for approximately one week, followed by a closure of the left lane once the right lane is reopened. Additionally, Manchester Street will be closed at its intersection with West High Street during this construction period. Access to Manchester Street and the Central Bank Center garage will be available via Oliver Lewis Way.

The installation of the speed tables is part of a broader effort to enhance traffic safety in the area. The city has identified West High Street as a site of concern, particularly in the vicinity of Merino and Madison Place, where accident rates have been notably high in recent years.

Speed tables provide a gentler alternative to traditional speed bumps, encouraging motorists to reduce their speed without causing significant disruptions to traffic flow. Two speed tables were recently added near the Central Bank Center and Rupp Arena, aligning with the city’s initiative to improve safety and pedestrian experience in downtown areas.

City officials emphasize the necessity of these lane closures for the successful installation of the speed tables, which are designed to help reduce speed and enhance safety on this crucial thoroughfare.

Motorists and pedestrians are advised to plan their travels accordingly during this construction period to avoid delays and ensure safety.
