Kentucky is bracing for a winter storm, with school closures and virtual learning set to take effect across Central and Eastern regions. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch, prompting various school districts to cancel in-person classes and shift to online learning. As communities prepare for snow and icy conditions, some schools are opting for traditional snow days while others implement remote instruction. Residents are advised to stay safe and warm during the storm.
As winter settles in, Central and Eastern Kentucky residents are preparing for some snow and icy conditions this coming week. The National Weather Service has put out a winter storm watch for numerous areas across the state. This means that many kindergarten through high school students in these parts will be taking a snow day instead of heading back to class.
In preparation for the expected weather, several school districts have decided to cancel in-person classes for Monday. Notably, Lincoln County Schools announced they would be closing doors for both Monday and Tuesday, transitioning to virtual learning during this period. This means students can learn from the comfort of their homes while staying cozy.
If you were looking forward to starting the week post-winter break, Fayette County Public Schools had originally planned to return on Tuesday. However, all in-person activities for Monday have been scrapped. Interestingly, a staff work day was set for Monday as well, but now it’s back to the drawing board for everyone involved.
Fayette County officials plan to provide updates on Tuesday’s schedule by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, so keep an ear to the ground for any news!
Across the board, there are mixed responses to how schools are managing this winter weather. Some districts are embracing the virtual learning format, while others have simply called it a snow day with no learning planned.
Here are some districts venturing into at-home learning on Monday:
On the flip side, some schools that announced traditional snow days with no online classes include Morgan, Franklin, Clark, Lawrence, Madison, Casey, Paris City Schools, and Pulaski. It seems like they’re opting to let students enjoy a classic snow day!
Additionally, Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School, along with Lexington Christian Academy, also announced closures on Monday without going into further details.
With Lincoln County Schools implementing virtual learning both on Monday and Tuesday, it’s clear they’re preparing to keep the learning going despite the snowy weather. Similarly, Floyd County Schools made their announcement for January 6, noting that it would be NTI Day 4, a day dedicated to non-traditional instruction.
As it stands, the entire state of Kentucky is under a winter storm watch that continues through Monday evening. The upcoming storm is expected to unleash a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. This could result in slippery roads and potentially hazardous conditions—something to keep in mind if you’re planning to venture out!
Anderson County Schools are also joining the ranks with at-home learning plans for Monday, while Morgan County Schools and Franklin County Schools have opted for the classic snow day, providing families with the chance to enjoy some time together indoors, away from the chill.
For the moment, Boyle County Schools have put out a notice that no vehicles should enter school parking lots on Monday. This will help maintenance crews manage snow removal without any obstacles.
As we prepare for the arrival of snowflakes and chilly temperatures, families across Central and Eastern Kentucky can stay warm, stay safe, and get ready for a snow day that could be filled with hot cocoa, snow angels, or simply catching up on that favorite show!
