Lexington, Kentucky – A significant shift in weather is forecasted for Central and Eastern Kentucky, as mild mid-week temperatures give way to cooler, wintry conditions. The National Weather Service in Louisville predicts highs of only 46°F in Lexington on Wednesday, but temperatures will plummet into the 20s overnight into Thursday. From there, highs are set to range from the high 30s to low 40s on Thursday and dip further to the mid- to high 30s on Friday.
Parts of Eastern Kentucky are bracing for drastic temperature swings. For example, Pikeville is expected to reach a high of 59°F on Wednesday, but will experience a dramatic drop to only 35°F by Sunday. Similarly, Somerset will see a decrease from 57°F on Wednesday to 37°F on Sunday.
Showers and thunderstorms are predicted to move through Central Kentucky on Wednesday morning, bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds to the south-central region. According to the weather service, this wet weather will transition to colder and drier conditions on Thursday, with a minor chance of light snow and rain resurfacing on Friday.
In the wake of Wednesday’s rain, Eastern Kentucky may see light snow accumulations Friday morning into early Saturday. However, impacts are expected to be minimal to minor.
In addition to the cold and precipitation, the weather service has issued a flood warning for the Green River in Muhlenberg County. The river at Paradise is forecasted to crest Friday evening at 3 feet above flood stage. Minor flooding is also anticipated along the South Fork of the Little River at Hopkinsville, with advisories in place for potentially flooded low-lying areas in the Bowling Green vicinity due to poor drainage.
