Lexington is witnessing a revival of its beloved cultural institution, the Kentucky Theatre, thanks to the efforts of the Friends of the Kentucky Theatre. This non-profit organization took over management of the historic venue in 2021 after the previous management group announced its retirement amid the uncertainties of the pandemic.
Set to celebrate its 100th birthday in 2022, the Kentucky Theatre has transformed significantly under the management of co-chairs Hayward Wilkirson and Lisa Meek. The duo, both longtime movie enthusiasts and friends, stepped in during a challenging time when cinema faced competition from streaming services.
Since their takeover, the theater has transitioned into a fully operated non-profit, implementing a growing membership program that engages patrons more actively. The theater has also expanded its programming, balancing first-run films with a curated selection of cult classics and repertory series that invite further community engagement.
In September 2023, the Kentucky Theatre launched its second installment of the Twelve Lions Film Festival, an international event that saw an impressive increase in submissions—from about 100 films in its inaugural year to over 800 this year. This remarkable growth signifies renewed interest and support from filmmakers worldwide.
Wilkirson, who serves as the executive director, expressed enthusiasm about the theater’s progress over the past three years. “It’s been an honor to direct The Kentucky. The positive feedback from Lexington moviegoers has been incredibly rewarding,” he stated. Meek, as board chair, highlighted the ongoing challenges of competing with streaming platforms and reaching new audiences, particularly newcomers to the area.
To enhance the movie-going experience, the theater has introduced various creative initiatives including special events, filmmaker Q&As, and themed cocktails, offering a distinct attraction to draw in cinema lovers. These efforts aim to strengthen the theater’s connection to the community, making the experience more immersive and memorable.
The selection of films is determined by a collaborative approach, with input from programming coordinator Max Morris, Meek, and Wilkirson. They consider patron suggestions and monitor trends at other independent cinemas to keep their offerings fresh and relevant.
Despite the challenges faced by historic theaters across the nation, the Kentucky Theatre has embraced a spirit of collaboration. Meek pointed to organizations like the Art House Convergence, which facilitates networking among arthouse theaters, allowing them to share resources and strategies.
As the Kentucky Theatre continues to evolve, it stands as a testament to the enduring love for cinema in Lexington. With its rich history and innovative programming, it is well-positioned to thrive in the modern entertainment landscape.
