Provost IMPACT Award Spearheads Innovations in Pharmacy Education Through Intercollegiate Collaboration

Lexington, Kentucky – A Beacon of Transdisciplinary Innovations in Pharmacy Education

Aspiring to accelerate the drive towards innovative and transformative practices in academia, The Institutional Multidisciplinary Paradigm to Accelerate Collaboration and Transformation (IMPACT) Awards were initiated last year. The awards, boasting a financial pool topping $600,000, power projects which underscore transdisciplinarity, novelty, and alignment with the broader strategy embodied by The UK-PURPOSE.

Building Bridges across Diverse Pharmacy Colleges: The Faculty Exchange Initiative

One critically aligned IMPACT project is the “Faculty Exchange Initiative”, engineered within the precincts of the Pharmacy College at the University of Kentucky (UK). Trenika Mitchell, Craig Martin, and Unique Young-Nutter warmly helm this initiative. The trio aims to cultivate meaningful associations with pharmacy colleges situated across varying geographical, structural, and cultural landscapes.

Inaugural Legacy of Exchange Cemented

The erstwhile month bore witness to the fruitful embarkation of this initiative, characterized by the arrival of four external faculty members at the UK College of Pharmacy, which lasted for a fortnight. During their stay, the visiting scholars contributed their unique perspectives, encouraging robust cross-cultural exchanges and fostering enduring alliances. Each guest was deployed in seminars, engaged in collaborations with UK’s administrative, teaching, and studying bodies, and contributed to a myriad of enriching campus and community activities.

An Innovatory Initiative Encouraged by the IMPACT Awards

The exchange initiative encouraged representatives from the UK College of Pharmacy to visit Xavier University of Louisiana and the University of Texas at El Paso. Simultaneously, UK hosted academic entities from the mentioned colleges. The two-week period served as a catalyzing time of exchange and mutual learning, with shared seminars, collaborative meetings, collegial activities, and the creation of sustainable professional portals.

Forward-reaching Effects of the Exchange Initiative

The projected impacts of this initiative extend beyond the boundaries of the institution. According to Maya Angelou’s “Human Family,” it champions the sentiment, “for we are more alike my friends than we are unalike.” This initiative echoes the aspiration of cultural interaction and mutual educational benefit. It is expected to impact the community of colleges positively, particularly influencing the student body who will go on to provide improved care within the state of Kentucky.

Fuelling Future Research and Collaboration

In terms of future progress, the next steps remain evaluative examinations of the initiative’s success: gauging faculty experiences, assessing necessary amendments, and discussing continuing collaboration. If discovered beneficial, the vision is the reincarnation of this exchange for future cohorts. With this mindset of openness and collaboration, the University of Kentucky aims to continue leading in teaching, research, service, and care – all with a primary focus on the students and their transformative role in the society of tomorrow.
