FRANKFORT – Kentucky has launched its first online auction of confiscated alcohol, featuring a selection of rare bourbons and other beverages. The auction opened on November 27, 2024, and will close at midnight on December 11, 2024. This initiative is a result of a new law that allows the state’s alcoholic beverage control agency to auction alcohol seized during closed criminal investigations, rather than destroying it.
The auction showcases 32 bottles, including highly sought-after items such as two bottles of Old Rip Van Winkle, a Blanton’s Single Barrel Gold with Japanese markings, and a 2011 Four Roses Small Batch Barrel Strength. The offerings also include additional unique bourbons like E.H. Taylor bourbon, Eagle Rare 10-year, and Willett Family Estate Single Barrel Rye, among others.
Proceeds from the auction will support programs aimed at promoting responsible alcohol use for adults and awareness initiatives for youth, underscoring the event’s community-driven purpose. “This is a really good auction,” said Eric Gregory, president of the Kentucky Distillers’ Association. “There are some hard-to-find and rare bottles on there.”
The decision to auction confiscated alcohol rather than destroy it marks a significant policy shift for the state. Prior to this law change, Kentucky regulators were mandated to destroy seized alcohol after completing investigations. “We don’t like to see good bourbon poured down the drain,” Gregory stated.
With the auction now in progress, bidders can expect to find not only rare bourbons but also a “stock the bar” bundle that includes a variety of wines, vodka, rum, and whiskey. “It’s not every day you go to a liquor store and find a bottle of Blanton’s Gold,” Gregory added.
While there are no projections for total earnings from this auction, the Kentucky Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control is optimistic about its success and is already planning additional auctions for 2025. Bidders are reminded that items must be picked up in Frankfort as shipping is not allowed.
