NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. — A local couple is celebrating a significant win from the Kentucky Lottery, securing a hefty $90,000 after scratching off a ticket on October 7.
Phyllis and Donald Johnson, residents of Jessamine County, made their way to the lottery headquarters shortly after their win to claim their prize. The winning ticket, a $5 Gold Mine 9X, was purchased at Joe’s Food Mart on South Main Street in Nicholasville.
In a surprising twist, Donald was the one to reveal the good news to Phyllis while she was out on a drive with her uncle. “He said, ‘I hit $90,000!’ I said, ‘Oh, you’re lying,” Phyllis recounted. Excited, she quickly informed her uncle, “Oh my god, Donald just hit $90,000. I’ve got to go; we’re headed to Louisville!”
This win marks Donald’s first substantial lottery success, despite having won smaller amounts in the past. “I’ve hit $1,000’s and $2,000’s but nothing like this,” he said after securing their winnings.
After taxes, the Johnsons received a check totaling $64,000. Additionally, Joe’s Food Mart, the store that sold the winning ticket, will receive $900 as a bonus for facilitating the sale.
The couple plans to use a portion of their winnings to settle bills and make future plans, expressing gratitude for this unforeseen fortune.
