Kentucky Secures $40.7 Million to Boost Healthcare and Economic Growth during SOAR Summit

Pikeville, Kentucky — A significant development in healthcare and economic growth unfolded during the recent SOAR Summit, where Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, U.S. Representative Hal Rogers, and local officials presented a check for $40.7 million from the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s Recompete Pilot Program to the SOAR organization. This funding aims to enhance regional economic performance and public health initiatives.

In a related announcement, the University of Kentucky unveiled its new healthcare initiative, the Advancing Kentucky Together Network, during the summit held from October 16-18. Eli Capilouto, President of the University of Kentucky, along with Britt Brockman, M.D., Chairman of the UK Board of Trustees, introduced this initiative, signaling a strategic partnership with Pikeville Medical Center (PMC).

The initiative is designed to address the growing health, education, and workforce demands across the state. Capilouto announced that the Advancing Kentucky Together Network would start with clinical partnerships and expand based on the needs of its healthcare partners.

“Partnership is the key word,” said Capilouto, emphasizing the collaborative approach between the university and healthcare providers. “We are pleased that our first partner is Pikeville Medical Center. Our goal is to advance the health of all Kentuckians.” He highlighted the importance of a coordinated healthcare approach, leveraging local expertise from both the university and Pikeville.

The Board of Trustees approved the initiative on October 18, during their annual retreat, preceding the summit. The Advancing Kentucky Together Network aims to provide extensive investments in resources and intellectual property via UK HealthCare, implementing a new model to improve health outcomes, workforce training, and education across the state.

Donovan Blackburn, President/Chairman/CEO of PMC, discussed the partnership and collaborative efforts during a meeting with the trustees. The university anticipates that additional healthcare providers will join the network, enhancing the healthcare landscape in Kentucky.

Brockman echoed Capilouto’s sentiments, stating, “Our board wants to send a message that your university — Kentucky’s university — is committed to partnering with SOAR and community leaders to advance healthcare in Kentucky.”

The initiative not only focuses on treating diseases but also prioritizes disease prevention, marking a proactive step in improving statewide health outcomes. The collaborative endeavor reflects a commitment to addressing the challenges faced by Kentuckians in accessing quality healthcare.

This initiative comes at a pivotal moment as Kentucky aspires to strengthen its healthcare system while enhancing economic conditions in the Appalachian region. With supportive funding and strategic partnerships, leaders aim to bring transformative changes that benefit individuals and communities across the state.
