In a thrilling start to the gymnastics season, the University of Kentucky gymnastics team, curiously positioned at No. 8, pulled off a stunning upset against the heavily favored No. 3 Alabama. The Wildcats filled the newly renovated Historic Memorial Coliseum with energy and anticipation, drawing a spirited crowd of 4,799 fans from Big Blue Nation. What a way to kick off the season!
From the moment the competition began, the Wildcats set the tone with their incredible routines. Kentucky managed to smash through their season-high with a team score of 197.300—a score that not only put them ahead of Alabama’s 196.100 but also showcased the Wildcats’ dominant skills on every event.
The team impressively scored above 49.275 on each apparatus. Notably, it was their performance on the beam that truly shone, where they achieved a remarkable score of 49.400. This score even ties for the ninth-highest team score in program history, marking a significant achievement for the Wildcats!
As for the vault and bars, the team also delivered commendable scores of 49.300 and 49.325 respectively. Both marks are tied for the 11th-highest in program history, which adds even more luster to their victory. It wasn’t just about the team scores either—individual athletes shone bright as well!
In the all-around competition, sophomore Delaynee Rodriguez created a buzz by tying for first with Alabama’s Lilly Hudson, each scoring an impressive 39.450. Just behind them, Alabama’s Gabby Gladieux came in third with 39.425, while Kentucky’s Skylar Killough-Wilhelm finished fourth with 39.375.
Rodriguez started solidly on vault with a score of 9.800, and her teammates kept the momentum going. Cecily Rizo followed with a score of 9.825, then true freshman Ryan Noonan wowed everyone with 9.850. The veterans stepped up too, as senior Makenzie Wilson topped the vault with a score of 9.900 and fifth-year Isabella Magnelli triumphed with an exceptional 9.925. Magnelli tied for the event title on vault with Alabama’s Hudson.
On the bars, Rodriguez and Killough-Wilhelm continued to dazzle. Rodriguez earned a score of 9.900 while Killough-Wilhelm set a season-high at 9.925, also tying for the bars individual title alongside Alabama’s Ryan Fuller. The beam routine was yet another display of excellence with Rodriguez nailing a score of 9.900. Sophomore Sharon Lee marked her debut with a solid 9.900 as well!
Finishing off with flair, the Wildcats executed a strong series of floor routines, where Davis brought down the curtain with a score of 9.900, tying for the event title with Alabama’s Gladieux.
Several athletes also got their moment in the spotlight as exhibitions, such as Annie Riegert with a score of 9.750 on bars and Chesney Bennett who scored 9.625 on beam.
As the Wildcats gear up for their next challenge against No. 10 Missouri on January 26, 2025, all eyes will be on them. Head coach Tim Garrison expressed excitement over the team’s performance and the electric atmosphere supplied by its loyal fans. With such a bright start, there’s no telling just how far the Wildcats will go this season!
