Residents and travelers in Kentucky received a welcome surprise leading up to the annual Memorial Day Holiday as gas prices tumbled, providing slight relief to consumers.
In a report from the AAA East Central’s Gas Price Report, fuel prices dropped by 13 cents on average in the state. As a result, the average price of a gallon of gas in Kentucky this week dropped to $3.23, down from $3.36 the previous week. Interestingly, this matches the average price from a year ago.
Among the areas within the state, the most affordable average price for gas can be found in Owensboro, with a cost of $3.05 per gallon.
The downward shift in gas prices in Kentucky follows a similar trend on the national scene. The national gas price saw a modest decrement of two cents, bringing down the cost to an average of $3.59 per gallon. This current average is eight cents less than a month ago, albeit it is five cents more than last year’s price.
According to AAA, the drop in gas prices is due to a combination of weak domestic demand and falling oil costs. With data showing a slight increase in gas demand from 8.79 million barrels per day to 8.87 last week, the weak pre-Memorial Day demand and declining oil prices, which fell below $80 a barrel, have contributed to the drop in pump prices.
Those looking to find the lowest gas prices could do with a visit to the cities of Louisville, Lexington, Bowling Green and various parts of northern Kentucky.
This drop in gas prices comes as a relief for both residents and businesses in the area, offering some savings ahead of the Memorial Day holiday. It also makes way for potential activities and travels during the holiday without the burden of high transportation costs. Moreover, it may prove good for local businesses as people are likely to spend more within their communities.
As of now, there is no indication as to how long these lowered prices will last, or if this trend will continue. However, the decreased gas prices remind us of the local and global factors that can impact our everyday lives and the importance of staying updated with changes in our economic environment.
