FRANKFORT, Ky. – Kentucky’s Education Commissioner designate, Dr. Robbie Fletcher, provided insights on his approach to the role in a Senate Education Committee hearing held on Friday afternoon.
“There’s no greater honor, there’s no greater trust, there’s no greater responsibility than when somebody tells you, ‘I’m going to send my child to your school,'” stated Dr. Robbie Fletcher, emphasizing the importance of students’ trust in the education system.
With a robust 28 years of experience in the field of education, Dr. Fletcher currently serves as the superintendent of Lawrence County schools. His considerable professional experience shaped the discussion during his committee hearing, covering various key topics in education, including the controversial school choice amendment.
Regarding the potential dynamic with the legislature, Dr. Fletcher commended this year’s education budget, though he emphasized that improvements are always possible. “I’ll probably ask for more, just to be clear, but at the end, this is absolutely the best budget that we’ve had thus far,” he clarified.
Dr. Fletcher candidly expressed that he might not align with everyone in Frankfort on all issues, but open and transparent communication would be at the forefront of his responsibility as Education Commissioner. “If I know your heart is for the kids, and my heart is for the kids, but yet we disagree, then maybe I need to listen a little better,” he noted encouraging input from various education stakeholders.
Before officially assuming the role of the state’s Education Commissioner, Dr. Fletcher will have to go through a Senate confirmation. This critical next step may shape the future of education in the state, and all eyes will be on the progress of these developments.
As Kentucky continues to navigate its educational landscape, the appointment of a seasoned education professional such as Dr. Fletcher to this significant state position promises to potentially bring about meaningful change. However, the road leading up to this pivotal point is an arduous one, with numerous considerations to take into account.
