Annual Lexington Derby Party Raises Substantial Funds for Charity
LEXINGTON, KY – This weekend thousands of Kentuckians made their way to Churchill Downs for the 150th Kentucky Derby. Meanwhile, many more were celebrating the “Run for the Roses” back home in their local communities. One specific gathering worth noting in Lexington was the 50th annual ‘Poor Man’s Harlan County Derby Eve Party’.
Beyond the Party’s Name
As peculiar as the party’s title sounds, this annual event actually took place in Lexington. The phrase, ‘Harlan County’ in the event title is a homage to the event’s founder and native of Harlan County, Bill Morgan. It was Morgan who decided to start the annual celebration 50 years ago when he was a student at the University of Kentucky.
“The party was an alternative for us poor college students who couldn’t afford to attend the big parties at Churchill downs. It began as a small gathering in an apartment complex but has since grown to be held at larger venues like the ‘Two Keys Tavern.’” Morgan revealed.
A Passion for Giving Back
Throughout the years, the ‘Poor Man’s Derby Party’ has evolved from a simple gathering to a large-scale celebration, now featuring a charitable purpose. This significant shift was suggested by one of his old schoolmates, Barbara Bailey, also originally from Harlan.
“Barbara suggested that because the party had grown so big, we should use it as a platform to raise funds for charity. That’s exactly what we did, and we have been doing it ever since,” said Morgan.
Benefitting a Noble Cause
This year, the party rallied support for the Lexington Fraternal Order of Firefighters’ toy program. All revenues generated through the silent auction and cover charges were directed towards this noble endeavor. “Our biggest goal every year is the firefighter toy program. We help thousands of kids every year to receive presents from this program,” Morgan added.
What initially commenced as a modest college party has now developed into a substantial fund-raising event. Friday’s party was a win-win scenario for attendees who not only got to relish in the biggest horse racing event of the year but also simultaneously contributed to a worthy cause.

It has become an esteemed communal event that consistently contributes to the less fortunate in the community.
