LEXINGTON, Ky. – Malachi Moreno, a 6-foot-11 center from Georgetown, Kentucky, has officially committed to the University of Kentucky for the upcoming fall semester, marking a significant addition to the basketball program during the NCAA’s early signing period. This move has excited fans and coaches alike, highlighting Moreno’s potential to impact the team immediately.
During his junior year, Moreno led his high school team, the Warhawks, to the Sweet 16 of the KHSAA state tournament for the first time in school history. Averaging 16 points, 13.3 rebounds, and 3.7 blocks per game, he demonstrated his prowess as an elite player, posting double-doubles in each of his games during the 2024 state tournament. There, he averaged 17.3 points and 16 rebounds, helping his team reach the semifinals.
The decision to join the Wildcats was fueled by a lifelong dream. Moreno expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Growing up in Kentucky, you always wanted to put on that Kentucky uniform.” Donning the iconic “Kentucky” across his chest is something he holds dear, and he understands the significance of playing for such a prestigious program. Head coach Mark Pope shares this excitement and recognizes the importance of Moreno’s emotional connection to the university, noting how he gets “a little teary-eyed when he walks into Rupp Arena.”
As he prepares for his senior season in 2024-25, Moreno is being hailed as a prime contender for Kentucky’s prestigious Mr. Basketball award. He is also actively involved in AAU basketball, playing for Indiana Elite, a program known for producing high-level talent. This past summer, the team advanced to the Adidas 3SSB circuit championship game, showcasing Moreno’s ability to perform under pressure. His participation in major recruiting showcases, including the Adidas Eurocamp, the NBPA Top 100 Camp, and the Under Armour Next Elite 24 Showcase, has further solidified his status among the elite players in the nation.
Moreno’s talent is part of a larger family legacy in basketball. His older brother, Michael, made a name for himself at Eastern Kentucky University, becoming the first player in the school’s history to score over 1,500 points and grab 900 rebounds. This familial connection to the sport adds another layer of significance to Malachi’s journey as he steps into the spotlight.
With Moreno joining the Kentucky Wildcats, the program adds a promising young talent with the potential to become an impactful player in college basketball. Fans are eager to see how his skills develop as he prepares for not just the rigorous demands of the sport but the legacy of excellence at the University of Kentucky. As he embarks on this new chapter of his basketball career, the Lexington community is ready to support and cheer him on.
