Kentucky American Water Suspends Billing Amid Cybersecurity Incident

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky American Water has announced a pause in billing for its customers following a significant cybersecurity incident. The utility company’s parent organization, American Water, reported unauthorized activity within its computer systems, prompting immediate action.

The company learned of the cybersecurity breach on Thursday, October 3, 2024. In response, they have taken the MyWater customer portal offline, effectively halting all billing processes until further notice. Currently, the nature and scope of the incident is under investigation, with American Water working alongside third-party cybersecurity experts and law enforcement to address the issue.

As part of their mitigation efforts, crucial systems have been deactivated to prevent further unauthorized access and protect customer data. In an official statement, Kentucky American Water reassured customers that no late fees will be charged during this interruption of service, and accounts will not be affected by potential service disconnections.

American Water is known as the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the United States, providing services to over 14 million customers across 14 states and on 18 military installations. They have emphasized that, to their knowledge, there has been no detrimental impact on their water or wastewater facilities due to this incident.

As the situation develops, Kentucky American Water committed to providing updates on their website. Customers are encouraged to stay informed as the company works diligently to resolve the incident and restore normal service.
