LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Keeneland Library, a repository of horse racing history, serves as a unique resource for researchers and enthusiasts alike. Under the stewardship of Roda Ferraro, who has been the library director for a year following her tenure since 2014, the library houses approximately 30,000 books and 25 million articles related to the equine industry.
Located on the grounds of Keeneland, the library is celebrated for its exclusive collection. Ferraro explains that the library has offered free access to its resources for most of its 85-year history. However, unlike typical online searches, obtaining information often requires direct communication with the library staff to assist in research.
“For many of the turf writers, sports writers, and broadcasters we work with, location plays a significant role in their access to our collections,” Ferraro noted. She has facilitated connections for about 10,000 researchers, providing access to documentation pivotal to understanding Kentucky’s illustrious horse racing heritage.
Ferraro describes her role as both gratifying and unique, emphasizing that few institutions provide the same level of specialized access to niche resources in the world of horse racing. “The energy and passion that people bring to what it is that they’re creating here is incredibly rewarding,” she said, highlighting her commitment to education.
The library aims to expand its outreach beyond seasoned researchers by developing exhibits and programs tailored for younger audiences. Through these efforts, Ferraro seeks to instill an appreciation for Kentucky’s connection to horse racing among the next generation.
