Jessamine County Health Department Hosts CODE RED Training to Address Mental Health Crises Proactively

Nicholasville, Ky. – The Jessamine County Health Department conducted a “CODE RED” training session on Monday evening aimed at equipping participants to tackle mental health crises proactively. The initiative focuses on preparing individuals and families for challenging times rather than solely responding during emergencies.

According to Melinda Barkley, the communications director and health education coordinator at the Jessamine County Health Department, a crisis plan enables individuals to think ahead about their needs during a mental health crisis. “It’s really available for everyone to individualize; we really encourage families to do them together and share them together,” Barkley stated.

The “CODE RED” program outlines essential steps for crisis management. Participants learn to identify people to contact in emergencies, brainstorm reasons for living, explore self-calming techniques, and devise ways to distract themselves from distressing thoughts. Kinsey Swafford, a prevention specialist at New Vista, emphasized the widespread impact of mental health issues, stating, “Mental health affects a lot of different people, and we need to be aware of that and be able to help ourselves because everybody at one point or another is going to encounter a really tough day.”

While discussions around mental health can be sensitive, the health department believes they play a crucial role in preventing and de-escalating crises. Barkley pointed out, “There’s no shame in having mental health problems. There’s no shame in preparing. That’s the best practice right there, is to be prepared.”

This proactive approach is increasingly important as communities acknowledge the mental health challenges faced by their residents. By fostering open dialogue and equipping individuals with the necessary tools, the Jessamine County Health Department seeks to reduce stigma and promote mental well-being throughout the region.
