Jessamine County Health Department Unveils New McCaw Wing to Enhance Public Health Services

Jessamine County, Kentucky – The Jessamine County Health Department (JCHD) marked a significant milestone with the grand opening of its new McCaw Wing on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. The event featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony and remarks from local dignitaries including JCHD Director Ann Stevens, Jessamine County Judge Executive David West, and Dr. Steven Stack, Commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Public Health.

The expansion aims to enhance public health services in the community by providing over 4,900 square feet of additional space. Notable features include a new community room capable of hosting 154 individuals for mass vaccination clinics and employee training sessions. Construction began 14 months ago, with the project completed for a total investment of $2.4 million. The state contributed $1.8 million through various grants, while the remainder was funded by the local health department.

Dr. William McCaw, a well-respected veterinarian in Jessamine County, is the namesake of the new wing, recognizing his over 40 years of voluntary service to the health department. Director Stevens commended McCaw for his unwavering support throughout the construction process, stating, “He’s always there for me.” During his speech, McCaw expressed gratitude for the honor and emphasized the importance of community backing for the health department’s operations.

In line with the expansion, the facility includes a dedicated area for the HANDS program, which provides in-home support for new and young parents. This initiative received a grant of $524,000, allowing for the development of six private offices to facilitate its services. Dr. Stack described HANDS workers as “aunties” to families, highlighting the close-knit relationships formed through the program.

Furthermore, the new wing addresses critical healthcare needs, housing services such as the Harm Reduction team and the Syringe Exchange Program. Among its key features is a generator acquired via a $20,000 grant to ensure the preservation of vaccines and other perishables during power outages.

Judge West commented, “This facility is going to help people,” emphasizing the dual nature of the investment as both an enhancement of infrastructure and a commitment to improving the quality of life for local residents.

The opening of the McCaw Wing represents a vital step forward in expanding public health resources in Jessamine County, ensuring the department is well-equipped to address the evolving needs of its community.
