Georgetown, Ky. – A Scott County non-profit organization honored the late James Thompson, a former Georgetown Police Officer, for his significant contributions to the local community. Thompson, who made history as the first African-American to join the Georgetown Police Department in 1968, was posthumously awarded the inaugural Grace Harbor Public Service Award. Rev. Douglas Kellione, the founder of Grace Harbor, emphasized the importance of honoring individuals who serve out of love for the community and its residents. “We want to honor people who served their community, and give in aspects where they don’t get a payday,” said Kellione. “They are just giving because of love of individuals and love of community.”
The ceremony provided an opportunity for Thompson’s family and friends to gather and reflect on the impact he had on countless lives. Although he passed away last month, Thompson’s legacy remains vibrant in Georgetown. Ken Cartier, who grew up alongside Thompson’s children, described him as a role model in both family and community settings. “He was a representation of what a father should be not only in the home but in the streets,” Cartier remarked.
Family members and community members alike shared memories of Thompson’s unwavering faith and his respectful demeanor toward others. “When him and his son would be running around doing God knows what, he would still treat as a friend of his son’s with dignity and respect,” said Cartier.
Thompson’s commitment to community service extended beyond his role in law enforcement; he was dedicated to his ministry and promoted a message of living life to the fullest. Rev. Kellione summed up Thompson’s philosophy encapsulating his compassion: “Just a man who loved people, and he just wanted people to have the best life they could have lived.”
The Grace Harbor non-profit organization plans to replicate this honoring of community heroes like Thompson annually, ensuring that their contributions are not forgotten and continue to inspire future generations.
