Lexington, Ky. — Celebrations are underway as Isabel Yates, a prominent figure in the community, marks her 100th birthday today. Yates, who served as Lexington’s first female vice mayor, is surrounded by family and friends, reflecting on a century of contributions to her city.
Yates expressed her gratitude for her supportive family and her relatively good health. “I have a good family, and I’m in pretty good health, to be 100 years old,” she stated.
Throughout her life, Yates has been an advocate for various initiatives within Lexington, notably her work with LexArts, McConnell Springs, and the Lexington Opera Society. “I love to be of service of course, and I love my city, and I want to do the best for it,” she shared, highlighting her enduring commitment to community service.
Reflecting on her career in urban county government, Yates remarked, “Urban county government was good to me, and I think I was a leader for them.” Her influence can be seen in the many cultural and artistic programs she has championed over the years.
Beyond her public service, Yates takes pride in her expansive family. “I have four children and eight grandchildren; can you believe it? It’s wonderful,” she said, indicating the importance of family in her life.
Even at 100, Yates remains engaged in her interests, enjoying activities like playing bridge. “I just have a lot of fun with people, I love people, I play bridge sometimes, I think I play a pretty good game of bridge so that’s fun,” she commented, showcasing her vibrant personality.
