Investigation Underway After Recent Sexual Assaults at University of Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Kentucky is under scrutiny following a series of sexual assaults reported on campus, with the latest incident occurring on the night of November 10, 2024. UK Police are actively investigating this situation, marking the fifth reported sexual assault within three months.

The Incident

The sexual assault was reported to authorities on November 13 after it took place near the intersection of Rose Street and Euclid Avenue, a location close to the UK Police headquarters. According to police, the victim is not familiar with the suspect, who has since been identified. UK’s police department emphasized their dedication to thoroughly investigating this assault.

A History of Assaults

In September and October, three sexual assaults were reported, all involving victims who knew their attackers and occurred within campus residence halls. The last reported incident outside this trend happened on October 17. Authorities have confirmed that these earlier cases are not related to the recent incident.

Safety Measures Increasing

This latest report came just days after the UK Police announced enhanced safety measures across campus due to the increase in assaults and a separate incident involving gunfire near campus on November 3. This shooting occurred at the Raising Canes eatery at Winslow and South Upper streets. Thankfully, no victims were found, but investigations by Lexington Police are ongoing.

Resources for Students

To improve safety for students, the University of Kentucky offers several measures, including SAFECATS, a free escort service available to students out late at night, as well as a ride voucher program allowing eligible students to utilize local transportation. Students can easily access these services by calling 859-257-SAFE (7233).

UK also encourages students to report any incidents of harassment or assault through their Title IX Office. Additionally, the Violence Intervention and Prevention Center provides free and confidential support for those affected by sexual violence. Further information can be obtained by calling 859-257-3574.

University’s Response

In a statement released by UK spokesperson Jay Blanton, he reassured the community that the university is taking these incidents very seriously. He confirmed that the identified suspect is still under investigation and has not yet been arrested. “Sexual assault is never the victim’s fault. The only person responsible is the perpetrator,” he emphasized, conveying the university’s commitment to preventing further incidents.

As part of its ongoing efforts, the University mandates that all first-year students take courses focusing on sexual assault and alcohol awareness. Programs designed to educate students about prevention are offered through the university’s VIP Center.

Community Response

University leadership is actively monitoring this situation, formulating strategies to enhance student safety and reduce occurrences of sexual assault. With increased patrols, particularly on North Campus, safety continues to be a top priority. The community is reminded to remain aware and cautious, as everyone plays a role in ensuring a safe campus environment.

As investigations continue, students and staff are encouraged to utilize the available resources and remain vigilant while navigating campus. The University of Kentucky is adamant that such incidents will not define its community, but rather, the collective effort to foster a safe and supportive environment.
