Women Celebrated in Lexington on International Women’s Day

LEXINGTON, Ky — The spirit echoed globally, and Lexington was no different as the city celebrated International Women’s Day in full swing, with a host of inspiring events paying tribute to women from all walks of life. Dozens of women from various parts of the world converged in downtown Lexington to mark the occasion.

Diverse Groups of Women Make Their Mark

From thriving entrepreneurs who single-handedly built brands to young activists striving for change, Lexington witnessed a spectrum of female power and resilience. One of the highlights included a courageous 20-year-old Berea College student, who escaped the grips of the Taliban in Afghanistan. She now runs a non-profit aimed at empowering other young women with vital education and resources to follow suit. This brave young woman states, ‘As I tell my story, I bear the weight of women who are trapped.’

Ziva Voices Highlights Women’s Issues

The event was notably enhanced by Dr. Kinga Minch, the Founder of Ziva Voices, who made it her mission to gather diverse groups of women and furnish a platform to showcase their various cultures, languages, and ideas. In her words, “We can have really deep conversations in order to find solutions to a lot of problems that we really share all together even though we come from different backgrounds.”

Maker’s Mark: A Testament to Female Prowess

Besides the events by Ziva Voices, Kentucky also saw the Maker’s Mark partnership with the nonprofit, Vital Voices, bringing light to the influence of women in bourbon making. It was Margie Samuels, a pioneer woman, who was instrumental in shaping the brand. She created not only the bottle but also the signature red wax and even the name.

This year, artist Gayle Kabaker was chosen to design this label for Women’s History Month. This initiative was to honor all the awe-inspiring women who are doing outstanding work in various fields. “They’re all so smart, doing such important work. And it feels like a real privilege to be apart of that,” Kabaker said proudly.

Ziva Voices Welcomes New Voices

Ziva Voices sets the stage for women to contribute their voices to the global conversation and is always scouting for fresh voices. In another noble gesture, Maker’s Mark has announced a donation of $50,000 to Vital Voices, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering and amplifying women’s voices around the world.

This International Women’s Day thus turned a new leaf in Lexington’s efforts to empower and uplift women from diverse backgrounds, steps that will hopefully pave a path for greater gender equality and women’s empowerment in the days to come.
