Board of Health Appoints Dr. Steve Davis as Interim Commissioner of Health in Kentucky

Lexington, Ky. — The Board of Health has appointed Steve Davis, MD, as the new Interim Commissioner of Health. The announcement was made by the Board of Health Chair, Majd Jabbour, in a recent statement.

Dr. Davis brings significant experience to the role, having served as a medical director. His prior leadership has had a substantial impact on public health initiatives across the state. Under his guidance, Kentucky established several key programs aimed at enhancing early childhood development. These initiatives include the Birth Defects Prevention program, the Home Visiting Program for improved pregnancy outcomes (HANDS), and the Healthy Start in Child Care program.

Jabbour emphasized Dr. Davis’s commitment to improved health outcomes, stating, “As a result of his leadership and commitment, these programs have provided crucial support for pregnant individuals and young children.” Dr. Davis also played a vital role in implementing immunization programs for underinsured children and initiatives focused on Early Childhood Mental Health and Oral Health for Children.

Additionally, Dr. Davis was instrumental in the establishment of six Diabetes Centers of Excellence statewide. These centers offer education on diabetes management and treatment, which has led to enhanced health outcomes for Kentucky’s diabetic population.

As the search for a new health commissioner progresses, the board believes that Dr. Davis is “poised to lead us into our next chapter.” His extensive background in the medical field positions him well to address the health challenges facing the community moving forward.

The transition in leadership comes at a critical time for public health in Kentucky. The Board of Health’s confidence in Dr. Davis reflects a continued commitment to improving health outcomes and supporting essential health programs statewide.
