Holiday Safety Tips Urged as Emergency Visits Spike in Lexington, KY

Lexington, KY – As the holiday season approaches, residents are reminded of the potential hazards that can accompany festive gatherings and traditions. Emergency department visits tend to spike during this time of year, prompting health experts to share essential safety tips for a joyful and injury-free holiday.

The dangers associated with holiday celebrations range from food poisoning to falls from ladders. According to Dr. Zachary Warriner, a trauma surgeon and associate trauma medical director at UK HealthCare, food safety is paramount when preparing holiday meals. “Practice safe food handling techniques, ensure proper storage for leftovers, and wash hands regularly, especially if interacting with guests who may be unwell,” he advises.

With children often present in homes during the holidays, it’s crucial to secure medications, cleaners, and small batteries out of reach. Additionally, holiday plants like mistletoe, holly, and poinsettias can pose poisoning risks. Symptoms of exposure may include nausea, diarrhea, and rash.

As families hang decorations, the use of ladders introduces a risk of significant injuries. Dr. Warriner cautions against using ladders in wet or icy conditions and emphasizes the importance of having someone present to assist while climbing. “Thousands of decoration-related injuries occur each year, so it’s vital to stay safe,” he said.

Driving safety is another key area of concern during the holidays. Travelers are urged to allow extra time for their journeys, ensure all passengers are properly buckled, and avoid distractions, particularly in adverse weather conditions.

Dr. Warriner identifies specific situations that necessitate immediate medical attention, including:

  • Severe abdominal pain, especially with accompanying symptoms.
  • Signs of a stroke such as sudden weakness or difficulty speaking.
  • Chest pain or breathing difficulties.
  • Loss of consciousness or extreme drowsiness.
  • Serious injuries like broken bones or eye trauma.
  • Concerns over possible poisoning or ingestion of harmful substances.

In summary, while the holiday season is a time for celebrations and connections, it is crucial for Lexington residents to remain vigilant and prioritize safety to ensure their festivities remain enjoyable.
