June 21, 2024: Escalating Heat Index Calls for Safety Measures

Lexington, KY — With the heat index predicted to hike up to the upper 90s and possibly even the 100s, the city administers Phase One of the Heat Plan. The activation of Phase One will occur from Saturday, June 22, and will extend through Tuesday evening, June 25. The Phase operations will include multiple survival-assisting schemes to endure the soaring heatwave.

Furthermore, the outreach teams will mobilize throughout the community to distribute water and essential cooling items.

In line with the mandate, Lexington’s community centres, including Dunbar, Kenwick, Castlewood, and Tates Creek, will remain open till the early hours of the evening. These centres will function as cooling stations for those struggling to find reprieve from the progressive heat. The city vows to keep a close check on the heat index and to expand the options and resources as the need arises. Lexington’s Division of Emergency Management extends special stress on citizens, especially those venturing outdoors during late mornings till the afternoon.
