BGE Contractor and Homeowner Dead in Harford County House Explosion, Community Members Displaced

BGE Contractor and Homeowner Killed in Harford County House Explosion

Deadly Blast Displaces Community Members

A Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) contractor and a septuagenarian homeowner died following a house explosion on Sunday morning in Harford County. The incident also resulted in a neighboring resident’s injury and the displacement of 12 families in the community.

According to Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office representative, Oliver Alkire, the homeowner, a wheelchair user, was preparing his house for sale when the calamity occurred. He was scheduled to meet with a realtor on the day of the disaster.

Details of the Incident

The explosion, a result of a gas leak, occurred early Sunday morning, around 6:30 a.m. in the 2300 block of Arthurs Woods Drive in Bel Air South. The blast took the life of the homeowner, believed to be 73 years old, and a 35-year-old BGE contractor working on site.

Contacted following reports of electrical activity around the house the previous night, the BGE team was dispatched to investigate the site on Sunday. Unfortunately, an explosion occurred shortly after their arrival.

Harford County Fire and EMS spokesperson Jeffrey Sexton emphasized that there is no prevailing threat to the general public and advised onlookers to stay clear of the active investigation scene.

Investigation Underway

The Maryland State Fire Marshal has initiated an investigation into the incident, in collaboration with the Harford County Sheriff’s Office and ATF. The Harford County Department of Emergency Services has also opened a hotline for residents to report any information related to the explosion.

Response from the Community

John Harbaugh, the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, shared his condolences upon hearing about the unfortunate tragedy. He expressed his thoughts and prayers for those affected by the incident and emphasized the importance of safety in such situations.

Neighborhood Shocked

Many in the neighborhood were awakened by the loud noise of the explosion, sparking confusion and panic among the residents. Some thought the boom was a result of an earthquake, while others feared a bomb had exploded. Following the blast, multiple homeowners reported broken windows and debris falling from the sky.

The impact was felt by nearby residents and those blocks away. Concerned neighbors swiftly attended an emergency responders’ briefing to inquire about the safety measures needed upon returning to their homes.

Signs of the Explosion

Debris from the explosion spread across a large area, extending nearly half a mile away. Harford County Executive Bob Cassilly confirmed that emergency responders are rigorously working to ensure everyone impacted by the explosion receives necessary aid. Additionally, structural engineers are examining houses in the vicinity to rule out any potential structural and foundational concerns resulting from the blast.
