Halloween Shoppers Surge Ahead of Season as Spending Predictions Climb

Halloween Shoppers Take Early Plunge as Spending Soars

Kentucky – Nearly half of Halloween shoppers have already begun their seasonal purchasing, reflecting a significant trend in consumer behavior this fall. According to a recent survey by the National Retail Federation (NRF), 47% of shoppers started their preparations before October, marking an increase from 37% in 2019 and 32% in 2014.

The NRF projects that total spending for Halloween 2024 will reach approximately $11.6 billion, nearing last year’s record of $12.2 billion. “Halloween starts the important run-up to the holiday shopping season,” noted the president of the Kentucky Retail Federation, suggesting that this behavior may indicate an earlier start to holiday shopping as consumers spread out their purchases.

This year’s individual spending for Halloween is expected to average about $104 per person, just shy of the previous record of $108.24. The spending breakdown includes $3.8 billion earmarked for costumes, another $3.8 billion for decorations, $3.5 billion for candy, and $500 million for greeting cards.

Consumers are increasingly turning to discount stores, with 37% planning to shop in these locations. Specialty Halloween and costume stores, along with online marketplaces, each account for 33% of intended shopping destinations.

Among the most popular children’s costumes this year are Spider-Man, ghosts, princesses, witches, and superheroes. Adults are gravitating toward witches, vampires, cats, Batman, and pirates. For pet costumes, trends show pumpkins, hot dogs, bats, ghosts, and bumblebees leading the pack.

Spending on costumes is expected to remain steady, with projected totals of approximately $1.8 billion on adult costumes, $1.3 billion on children’s attire, and $700 million on pet costumes. “Kentucky retailers take pride in providing customers with the wide selection they want along with the value they need,” emphasized Griffin, highlighting the commitment of local businesses to meet consumer needs during the Halloween season.

As consumers gear up for the festivities, the Kentucky retail community appears well-prepared to offer an array of decorations, costumes, and treats to enhance the Halloween experience. For further insights into local retail offerings, residents can connect with the Kentucky Retail Federation.
