Lexington – Grief counselors are on site at Frederick Douglass High School following the unexpected death of science teacher John Hershinow this past Sunday. Principal Lester Diaz informed families in a September 29 email, expressing that Mr. Hershinow “will be deeply missed throughout the Frederick Douglass High community.”

Despite the school being on fall break this week, counselors were made available on the campus Monday to provide support for both students and staff. “Additional counselors from the district will continue to be available for as long as they are needed for support,” Diaz stated. He added that counselors will also be present upon the school’s return from break on October 7.

In the email, Principal Diaz encouraged parents to engage in open conversations with students regarding their feelings about the loss. “When talking with students, please ask them about their feelings and do not be afraid to share your feelings, too,” he said, fostering a supportive environment during this difficult time.

The cause of John Hershinow’s death has not been disclosed. As a dedicated science teacher, he made a significant impact on the student body at Frederick Douglass High. The community now faces the challenge of coping with this sudden loss as they remember his contributions to their educational journey.

Grief counselors are expected to remain available in the days and weeks following the tragedy, ensuring that the community receives the necessary support. The wellbeing of students and staff during this mourning period is a priority for the school administration.
