Louisville – The Governor’s School for Entrepreneurs (GSE) has announced the opening of applications for its Summer Startup program aimed at high school students and its Collegiate Pitch competition for college-age participants. This initiative is part of GSE’s commitment to foster entrepreneurship among Kentucky youth.
The Summer Startup program will take place from June 22 to July 13, 2025, at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. It is designed for Kentucky high school students currently in the 9th, 10th, and 11th grades who have a keen interest in developing their entrepreneurial skills. The program is immersive and free of charge, with no grade-point averages or standardized test scores required for application. Interested students can apply at kentuckygse.com until 11 p.m. on January 21, 2025.
Simultaneously, the Collegiate Pitch competition will be held at Thomas More University. This event is geared towards college students and will allow them to present their business ideas in a competitive setting.
In another community effort, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will host its 27th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This initiative promotes the safe disposal of unused and expired medications, targeting the prevention of prescription drug misuse. Collection sites will be available at over 4,100 locations nationwide, although syringes and illicit drugs will not be accepted. Participants are advised to bring solid medications in original containers and remove batteries from vaping devices before disposal.
On a lighter note, Carter Caves State Resort Park will present a murder-mystery dinner titled “Death of a Gangster”, scheduled for November 1 and 2 at 6:45 p.m.. Guests can enjoy an all-you-can-eat buffet featuring carved prime rib and various side dishes, all for a fee of $49.95 plus tax. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the Lewis Caveland Lodge.
Meanwhile, Ashland Town Center is set to welcome a Build-A-Bear store, enhancing its offerings of over 75 retail, dining, and entertainment options. The new location is expected to open by the start of December and will be situated near the UK King’s Daughters Play Area in the shopping center’s Food Court.
Finally, for genealogy enthusiasts, Dr. Jane Richards will host a talk at the Greenup County Public Library on November 8 at 7 p.m.. She will cover topics related to the Adams, Curry, and Riffe families, offering insights into local history. This free event is supported by the Jesse Stuart Foundation.
