Lexington Humane Society Rescues Over 20 German Shepherds from Hoarding Situation

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Lexington Humane Society is preparing to welcome a significant number of dogs after rescuing over 20 German Shepherds from a hoarding situation on Old Richmond Road. This urgent rescue highlights the importance of community involvement in animal welfare.

The rescue effort began recently, as staff from the Humane Society responded to a situation where these dogs were living in overcrowded conditions. Four of the rescued shepherds have already found their forever homes, while two remain at the society. The others are currently with animal control, undergoing evaluations before they can be transferred for care.

In light of this situation, Katy Stoess from the Lexington Humane Society emphasizes the need for temporary foster homes to help accommodate these dogs. “If you can’t adopt, consider fostering to help make room and offer a furry friend a home, even if it’s brief,” she stated. The society aims to ensure that every animal has a place, utilizing creative solutions like buddying up dogs or temporarily setting up kennels in available spaces.

This hoarding situation differs from typical breeding scenarios, as all the dogs involved are adults not bred for profit. Instead, it arises from a well-meaning individual overwhelmed by their love for the breed. Stoess describes how affections lead to unintentionally creating an environment that is difficult to manage. “They love this breed and they fall in love with the first one and then find another,” she explained.

German Shepherds are known for their intelligence and active nature. Stoess characterizes them as “big lovable dummies” that tend to develop strong attachments to their families. However, their active lifestyle requires constant engagement and mental stimulation, which can become challenging if their living conditions are unmanageable.

The Lexington Humane Society is committed to supporting individuals facing similar situations. “If you get in a situation where you’re in over your head, we’re here to help and provide resources,” Stoess reassured, referring to the support offered to the individual involved in this case.

The Humane Society is calling on the community to assist by either adopting or fostering these dogs. With room needed for more animals arriving soon, any help provided can make a significant difference in the lives of these German Shepherds.
