Lextran to Offer Free Rides to Polling Places on Election Day to Boost Voter Turnout

Lexington, Ky. — On Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024, residents will have the opportunity to cast their votes without the barrier of transportation costs, as Lextran, the city’s public bus service, announces free rides to polling places.

Fayette County experienced a voter turnout of just 13.3% during the 2024 primary election, according to the Commonwealth of Kentucky State Board of Elections. To address this concern, Lextran aims to increase participation by offering complimentary rides on Election Day.

Fred Combs, Lextran’s general manager, stated, “Lextran is proud to offer fare-free rides this Election Day. We aim to alleviate the transportation challenges that many in our community encounter when accessing the polls.” This initiative is part of a broader effort to engage more voters and ensure that every citizen has access to the electoral process.

Polling hours will run from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Kentucky residents can visit the state’s Voter Information Center to locate their nearest polling location. Fayette County residents can plan their trips by using the address of their polling places to navigate Lextran’s system for the free rides. More information about this initiative can be found at lextran.com/go-vote-2024/.

Lextran operates 25 fixed routes as well as a door-to-door paratransit service, aiming to serve individuals with varying transportation needs. Residents requiring assistance in planning their trips can reach out to Lextran Customer Service at 859-253-INFO (4636).

The offering of free rides is a strategic response to the low voter turnout observed in previous elections, and Lextran hopes this initiative will foster greater participation in the democratic process.
