LEXINGTON, Ky. – As winter weather settles into the Bluegrass region, residents are preparing to ignite their fireplaces. However, before kindling those flames, experts emphasize the importance of a thorough fireplace inspection and cleaning.
Brion Barnhill, owner of Barnhill Chimney, indicates that his phone lines have been inundated with requests for fireplace checks, leading to a full booking schedule extending weeks into the future. “We inspect the chimney afterward to ensure it’s in good shape and you can enjoy your fireplace safely for the rest of the season,” Barnhill stated.
During these inspections, Barnhill notes that technicians look for hidden dangers, such as creosote buildup in the chimney. This residue, a byproduct of burning wood, can pose a serious fire risk if not properly managed. “When you call us out, we thoroughly inspect the system. We utilize a video camera to examine areas not visible to the naked eye, and we ensure everything is assessed from top to bottom, including the roof,” Barnhill explained.
Additionally, Barnhill highlights that gas fireplaces also require annual inspections, as they are considered appliances that need regular servicing. These checks are essential for preventing potential carbon monoxide hazards, a risk that many homeowners may overlook.
As people ignite their fireplaces this season, Barnhill recommends several safety tips: never leave a fire unattended, keep children and pets at a safe distance, and use only dry wood when burning.
To ensure safety and functionality, Barnhill encourages all homeowners to have their fireplaces and chimneys inspected at least once a year, safeguarding against potential hazards and ensuring a warm and safe winter experience.
