District spokesperson Dia Davidson-Smith shared that the analysis of social media usage showed that X only captured a meager 2.4% of the FCPS audience while other platforms performed significantly better. In fact, Facebook was leading the pack with an impressive 46.7%, followed by Instagram at 32.2%, and LinkedIn at 18.7%. This clear indication of waning engagement on X played a decisive role in the decision to move away from the platform.
Davidson-Smith emphasized that this decision is solely data-driven. “We are utilizing social media data to maximize our reach in the community,” she noted, ensuring that the decision is aimed at improving communication and not influenced by any recent incidents involving an individual board member’s posts.
Back in June, during a district equity council meeting, board member Amanda Ferguson faced backlash for some social media posts she made on X that included a laughing emoji and a GIF of an interactive toy, which some deemed inappropriate. However, Davidson-Smith clarified that FCPS’s decision to exit X was not a reaction to Ferguson’s posts but rather a strategic move to focus on platforms where their audience is more active.
Moving forward, Fayette County Public Schools will continue to engage with its community through Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. This multi-platform strategy will allow the district to connect with parents, students, and stakeholders more effectively.
