Fayette County, KY — Fifth grader Elena Duan has been named the winner of Fayette County Public Schools’ holiday card contest with her artwork depicting a snowy scene featuring six reindeer gathered around a plate of treats. Duan, a visual arts major at the School for Creative and Performing Arts (SCAPA) at Bluegrass, was selected from a pool of talented candidates submitted by elementary schools throughout the district.
The contest culminated in a decision made by Superintendent Demetrus Liggins, who chose Duan’s piece to represent the district’s holiday spirit this season. Duan’s artistic talents extend beyond creating festive imagery; she also enjoys a variety of activities, including reading, crafting, and origami. Furthermore, she is musically talented, playing both the violin and piano, and practices Chinese dancing.
Other top contenders in the contest included Josue Gonzales from Northern Elementary, Caroline Davies of Glendover Elementary, Ella Buckler from Sandersville Elementary, Logan Hawthorne of Julius Marks Elementary, and Majorith Perez Mendez from Coventry Oak Elementary.
By recognizing young artists like Duan, Fayette County Public Schools aims to promote creativity and celebrate the diverse talents of its students. The holiday card featuring her artwork will be used throughout the district, spreading festive cheer during this joyful season.
The announcement of the contest winner was made on December 11, 2024, and it serves as a reminder of the importance of arts education in schools. Such initiatives not only highlight individual achievements but also foster a sense of community and involvement among students and families.
