Heather Clary, a community and media relations coordinator with the Better Business Bureau, highlights several red flags that shoppers should be vigilant about this year. One common issue is fake websites that mimic well-known retailers but have minor variations in their URLs. Ensuring that a website URL starts with ‘https’ is a crucial step in verifying its security.
Social media platforms are particularly risky, according to Clary. Many users have reported ordering items only to find they never received them, alongside an inability to contact the seller as their page disappears. “It’s important to exercise caution when shopping through social media,” she advised.
Another warning sign is the lack of direct customer support options. If the only payment method available is through platforms like Zelle or PayPal, it might indicate a potential scam. Clary recommends using credit cards for transactions on reputable sites, as these provide buyers with valuable protections, allowing them to dispute charges if issues arise.
With many big-ticket items expected to be in high demand this holiday season, Clary advises consumers to trust their instincts. “If you see a hard-to-get item at an unusually low price, question whether you’re dealing with a legitimate seller,” she cautioned.
In the event that someone suspects they have been scammed, or nearly fell victim to a scam, Clary urges them to report their experience through the Better Business Bureau’s scam tracker. Taking this step can contribute to raising awareness about existing scams and prevent further victims.
