Survey Reveals Insights on Educational Opportunities for Kentucky Families
Louisville, KY — The Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence has released new findings detailing Kentucky parents’ perceptions of educational opportunities within their communities. Titled “The State of Educational Opportunity in Kentucky,” the study surveyed over 400 parents and guardians across the Commonwealth, shedding light on the strengths and challenges of the state’s public education system.
According to the report, a significant number of Kentucky parents express satisfaction with various aspects of their education system. Notably, Kentucky leads the nation with 45% of parents very satisfied with the mental health support provided by schools, surpassing the national average of 37%. Furthermore, families across income brackets report high confidence in college and career preparation, although disparities exist between low- and mid-high-income families regarding workforce readiness.
While these findings reflect positive perceptions, the survey also highlighted critical areas needing improvement. Only 31% of parents reported their children participated in summer learning programs, compared to the national average of 41%. An alarming disparity exists between income groups, as just 24% of low-income students are involved in these programs, versus 38% of their mid-high-income peers. Additionally, only 14% of parents indicated their children receive tutoring services, also lower than the national average of 19%.
Parental engagement with schools further emerged as a concern. Despite their awareness of academic performance, only 20% of respondents have attended school parent organization meetings, placing Kentucky below the national average. Moreover, only 16% stated they are familiar with how school budget decisions are made, identifying a need for enhanced transparency and involvement.
“Extended learning opportunities, such as tutoring and summer programs, alongside active family engagement, are critical components for student success,” stated an expert at the Prichard Committee. Moving forward, efforts will focus on identifying and promoting effective practices implemented by Kentucky communities that successfully expand educational opportunities and strengthen family partnerships.
This survey forms part of a larger initiative known as “The State of Educational Opportunity in America,” which assesses parent perceptions of education across the United States. The Kentucky sample represents a diverse group, considering various geographic regions, income levels, and school types.
