DV8 Kitchen in Lexington Receives Opioid Abatement Funds for Employee Development

Opioid Abatement Funds Granted to DV8 Kitchen in Lexington

In a recent announcement from Kentucky state officials that has stirred up excitement in the community, over $12 million in funding from the Kentucky opioid abatement advisory commission is to be distributed amongst 51 organizations across the state. Among the fortunate to receive a slice of the grant is DV8 Kitchen, a reputable Lexington establishment, which has been granted a noteworthy $150,000.

Turning Pain into Progress

The funds come from the Commonwealth’s share of a nearly $900 million opioid settlement, memorable words from Attorney General Russell Coleman dubbed it as, “This is blood money purchased by a pain and the devastation of families across the Commonwealth.” Coleman praised the organizations for their diligent life-saving efforts.

Purposeful Pivot for DV8 Kitchen

DV8 Kitchen, known for its active role in hiring individuals with histories of substance abuse, has expressed plans to divert this funding toward furthering the career goals of its current 42 employees. Owner, Rob Perez stated that the grant provides the means needed to support his staff’s futures, some of whom seek to transition away from the restaurant industry. Perez pointed out that the necessities of developing career progression for their employees, such as successful management coordinators, computers, and curriculum building, extend beyond what the restaurant’s profits can handle.

Next Steps for DV8 Kitchen

With the grant, DV8 Kitchen aims to empower its employees, encouraging them to explore career opportunities outside of the restaurant business, proving to be an initiative that’s echoed appreciation from its staff. Ryan Feller, the restaurant’s manager who himself has battled a 15-year long heroin addiction, believes the fresh injection of funds can propel his colleagues to achieve greater heights and breathe a renewed sense of purpose into their daily work.

Under this new arrangement, employees at DV8 are not only provided with the opportunity to work stable jobs but are also granted the ability to pursue other career paths. Feller elucidates, “We set them up for the schooling behind it. We let them know what they have to do and requirements all these things they need to do to set up for this career job.” Feller champions this move, believing that it creates a conducive environment for his team members to stay clean and work towards carving out more promising careers outside of the kitchen walls.

A Crystal Clear Future

Witnessing first-hand the transformative power that steady employment and a supportive environment could have, Feller is now thriving in a serene life with a wife, a newborn baby, and a welcoming home. With the announcement of this generous grant and the plans DV8 Kitchen has for its use, Feller’s story is an inspiring testament to what can be achieved when the right sort of help is provided to those battling addiction.
