Lexington, Ky. – The University of Kentucky (UK) kicks off its annual Donations for Citations program starting Monday, introducing a competitive element this year by challenging the University of Tennessee to gather the most donations. This initiative allows UK students and employees to donate 10 food or personal care items in lieu of resolving traffic citations amounting to $30 or less.
The program runs from October 14 to October 31, with a focus on benefiting the Big Blue Pantry. Any surplus donations will be distributed to UK’s Campus Kitchen and Take a Tampon programs. Maddie Duff, president of UK’s Student Government Association, spearheaded the idea for this friendly competition, collaborating with the University of Tennessee’s Student Government Association and transit offices.
Donations can be made at the UK Transportation Office, located at 721 Press Ave, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Individuals interested in contributing do not need to possess a traffic citation to participate. The list of requested donations includes non-glass, non-perishable items such as cereal, oatmeal, Pop-Tarts, canned meats, and fruit cups. Personal care items such as shower products, menstrual products, shaving products, and toilet paper are also welcomed, though travel sizes will not be accepted.
Through this initiative, UK aims to foster community spirit while supporting vital resources for students in need. The competition aspect adds an engaging twist, encouraging participation and highlighting the importance of food security on campus.
