Lexington Hosts Successful Day of the Dead Celebration at Moondance Amphitheater

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Lexington Parks and Recreation Department successfully hosted the Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, event at the Moondance Amphitheater on Saturday evening. The celebration, which ran from 5 PM to 9 PM, drew hundreds of attendees eager to embrace this rich cultural tradition.

The Day of the Dead event featured a vibrant array of traditional Latin dances, delicious food, and educational opportunities that detailed the significance of this cherished holiday. The partnership with Casa de la Cultura played a crucial role in bringing this community celebration to life, showcasing the essence of the festival.

Jessica Shaw from Parks and Recreation remarked, “This is kind of the end of the event season. We’re getting into the colder months, but that doesn’t stop anybody. It’s one of the most beautiful events to see a mixture of people, a mixture of backgrounds all coming together to enjoy this beautiful holiday.”

Attendees had the opportunity to shop with various vendors, create art, and even vote for their favorite ofrenda, which is a traditional altar set up to honor deceased loved ones. The inclusive atmosphere contributed to a deeper understanding and appreciation for the Day of the Dead, a holiday that celebrates life and remembrance.

This event marked not only a celebration but also a community gathering, inviting diverse individuals to partake in the festivities, thereby fostering unity and cultural respect within Lexington.

As the event season wanes with the approach of winter, the Lexington Parks and Recreation Department looks to continue providing unique cultural experiences for the community.
