In another exciting addition to Lexington’s downtown neighborhood, the much-anticipated Davis Park officially opened on Tuesday morning. Located along the scenic Oliver Lewis Way, the modern and vibrant park adds a breath of fresh air to the cityscape. This was inaugurated by none other than Mayor Linda Gorton, who enthusiastically cut the ribbon, thus signalling the official opening of the park.
Mayor Gorton was quoted saying, “We have a lot of exciting projects happening in this neighborhood. No neighborhood is complete without a beautiful park.” Revealing the communal collaboration that made this project a reality, she added a note of gratitude towards the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Lexington Community Land Trust, and the city’s dedicated Division of Parks & Recreation.
The creation of Davis Park happened as a joint venture between the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the city. Interestingly, the park stands in place of an older park, which was removed due to essential sewer improvements and the construction of the Oliver Lewis Way.
In line with this, the Kentucky Transportation Secretary, Jim Gray, stated “When we build roads, we take the needs of all people to heart – not just those who drive, but also those who live nearby” He went on to add, “Team Kentucky builds back better by providing safer passageways, more efficient connections, and important community resources like this park.”
It is worth noting that the conception and development process of Davis Park was indeed a thorough one, incorporating inputs from the residents in the neighborhood and from people throughout Lexington. This ensured that the park is shaped and built to cater to the needs and expectations of its community members.
As the new park shines bright at the heart of downtown Lexington, it certainly testifies to the ongoing beautification in the neighborhood, transforming it for the better. The park is ready to welcome children and families, recreational groups, and any who wish to take advantage of this new recreational resource.
Davis Park serves as a refreshing reminder of how thoughtful urban planning and developmental efforts can enhance the quality of life for its citizens. Moving forward, the park will act as a hub of community activities and interactions while also preserving a green space for future generations to enjoy.
